ARSENAL 2, A MADRID 1

ANDREY ARSHAVIN showed Arsenal

can cope without Emmanuel Adebayor

as he fired two late strikes to help his side

record a 2-1 victory in the Emirates Cup.

Arsenal fans must have been wondering where the goals were going to come from after Adebayor completed his £25million move to Manchester City.
But Arshavin, who stole all the headlines when he appeared as a second half substituten could be the key for Arsene Wenger if his side are to challenge for major silverware again this season.
All eyes were on Tomas Rosicky, who was making his first appearance back at Emirates Stadium since January 2008, but it was Arshavin who gave the home fans something to shout about when he broke the deadlock on 86 minutes when he fired a left-foot shot past Sergio Asenjo.
The Arsenal defence went to sleep as Atletico Madrid grabbed an equaliser just two minutes later when substitute German Pacheco broke the offside trap and slotted the ball past Vito Mannone.
But Arshavin ensured Arsenal came away with the victory as he fired the winner on 89 minutes.
The Russian superstar raced onto a high ball over the top of the defence before taking the ball around Asenjo and sliding the ball home from the tightest of angles.
